Earth Observation Challenge

Thank you for participating in the Earth Observation Challenge hosted by DigitalGlobe, Inc. and European Space  Agency (together, the “Sponsor”). These terms and conditions (“Participation Agreement”) constitute a binding legal agreement between you (the “Participant”) and DigitalGlobe with respect to the Earth Observation Challenge (“Competition”). In this agreement, the term “we”, “us” or “our” refers to DigitalGlobe and/or BeMyApp, as applicable, and the term “you” refers to you, the entrant, both as an individual and as part of your team.

By registering for this Competition or participating in any way, you fully and unconditionally agree to comply with all of  the terms and conditions below. If you do not agree with any of these terms and conditions, do not register for and participate in this competition and do not submit an entry. This competition is aimed at spreading scientific and technological works as well as developing information technology by giving awards to the winner/s as consideration of his/her/their works.

The Competition is designed to encourage the development of prototype algorithms within the geospace industry that  can be deployed on the DigitalGlobe Geospatial Big Data Platform (“GBDX Platform”) to process, analyze, and/or extract meaningful insights from DigitalGlobe and European Space Agency (ESA) satellite imagery and related data (“Licensed Content”). The Competition will be conducted in the English language.

The Competition will take place online from April 10, 2018, to July 30, 2018.

Interested persons and teams must register online via the Competition website during Step 1 (described below).

Applicants must provide, at a minimum, their name, contact information, and other information to support his/her  application to qualify for the Competition.

The Competition is open to both individuals and teams who are residents of countries located in Europe.

Applicants must be at least 18, or the age of majority in the jurisdiction where they reside, whichever is older.

The following people are not eligible to participate:

  • (a) individuals who are, or at any point since July 1, 2013, have been employed by (i) DigitalGlobe or any of its
  • direct or indirect affiliates or subsidiaries, (ii) BeMyApp Corporation or (iii) Eventbrite;
  • (b) immediate family (spouse, parents, siblings, and children) and household members of any those employees
  • or former employees;
  • (c) residents of non-European countries; or
  • (d) residents of countries where this competition is prohibited or restricted by applicable law.

Applicants will need access to the Internet and a valid email address to obtain an account on the BMA Platform.

Step 1 will begin on April 10, 2018 and end on May 22, 2018.

During Step 1, interested persons (“Applicants”) will register at the registration site identified in Section 2 above.

During this Step, Applicants will submit a short description of their proposed project for the Competition. Working  models or prototypes are not required at this stage.

DigitalGlobe will review the applications submitted during Step 1 and select thirty Applicants to advance to Step 2

Step 2 will begin on May 29, 2018 and end on July 15, 2018.

At the start of Step 2, the thirty selected Participants will be invited to create an account on the Bemyapp Platform  (“BMA Platform”), available at, where they will register their project and teammates.

Registered Participants will be provided with a free subscription to access the DigitalGlobe’s GBDX Platform and the  Licensed Content, subject to a subscription license agreement that will be provided to Participants at the beginning of Step 2.

Over the course of two months, Participants will use the GBDX Platform to create, develop, test, and finalize their  submission for the Competition. Participants will receive instructions, guidance, and coaching sessions though the BMA Platform.

Participants must submit via the BMA Platform a semi-final Entry on July 15, 2018, at 6:00 PM CET. Late Entries will  not be accepted and incomplete Entries will be disqualified at a minimum. Specific submission instructions will be provided to Participants in advance of the submission deadline.

Each semi-final Entry must consist of:

  • (a) an executable version of the Participant’s prototype application, service, program, and/or algorithm that uses DigitalGlobe’s GBDX Platform to process, analyze, interpret, or derive useful information from DigitalGlobe and/or ESA Content;
  • (b) a short demonstration video (maximum 60 seconds) of the prototype that explains how the prototype works;
  • (c) a short description of the prototype and how it uses, processes, interprets, or analyzes the Licensed
    Content, along with an outline of the benefits the prototype offers.

Optional materials may include: images/photos, a publicly-accessible link to the source code, additional videos,  presentation slides, or any other materials Participants feel would be appropriate for the judges to review. While judges may reference these supplemental materials, they will not be a part of the submission scoring criteria.

Please ensure that your Entry is suitable for disclosure to a broad audience as your Entry materials will not be kept  confidential.

From the semi-final Entries, five Participants will be selected to do a final demonstration between July 20 and July 25,  2018, to a final jury. Each final demonstration will be conducted as an online live 20-minute interview between the Participant’s team and the jury. Each team will have five minutes to demonstrate their prototype and pitch the benefits to the jury online, which will then be followed by 10-15 minutes of Q&A with the jury.

Following the final demonstrations, the jury will then review the Entries and select the three winning projects to be  rewarded.

The top three winning projects will be disclosed on July 30, 2018.

To be eligible for an award, you must create an innovative, demonstrable prototype that garners the most judging

points at the conclusion of the Competition.

  • Required Components. You must use the DigitalGlobe GBDX Platform as part of your solution. You will be    judged primarily on how you use the GBDX Platform to process and analyze Licensed Content and the scalability of your prototype. The Licensed Content that will be made available as part of this Competition is subject to change at any point before or during the Competition.
  • Other Technologies. You are allowed to use third-party code, libraries, SDKs, and APIs as long as these  technologies are: (a) publicly available and discoverable – meaning, available on the Internet as of November 1st, 2015; indexed and reachable through the top three search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo); and (b) easily accessible (i.e., anyone can download or access; if signup is required, access must be granted within 3 hours).
  • Originality. With the exception of the DigitalGlobe’s GBDX Platform, the Licensed Content, and other  allowed technologies/data, all code included in your Entry must be created by you and your registered team for the Competition. The idea for your Entry may have existed before the Competition. Your Entry will be judged not be discriminated against in the Originality criteria simply because a similar idea  already exists in another form.
  • Number of Submissions. Each team may only submit one Entry.
  • Language. All materials related to your Entry must be in English.
  • Required Permissions. If you use any third party copyrighted materials, you must have appropriate  permission and disclose the permission information to BeMyApp via email to Samantha Hart (

The judges will not be BeMyApp employees. If a Judge or participant has a conflict of interest, they must identify the  conflict to us and that judge will be recused from judging the Entry with the conflict. An alternate judge will be identified as a substitution for the judge with the conflict.

The judges will evaluate your Entry according to the following Judging Criteria, each of which will be scored on a  scale of 100. In the event of a tie, judges will deliberate to determine the winner.

Judges’ scores and feedback will be sent to each member who participated in the Competition by BeMyApp within 48  hours after the announcement of the winners.

Entries may be subject to a due diligence review for eligibility and compliance with this agreement or any other  posted requirements. Determination of eligibility and compliance is at our sole discretion, and may result in your disqualification. All Judicial decisions are final.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three Entries submitted in the Competition across all topics. All three winning  entries may be directed to the same or different topics. DigitalGlobe reserves the right not to award a prize in the Terms and Conditions for Earth Observation Challenge

event of an insufficient number of eligible entries meeting the minimum judging criteria as determined in  DigitalGlobe’s sole discretion. DigitalGlobe reserves the right to award additional prizes or giveaways with little or no notice.
